How much should I be reading?

A day without a book is like a day without food!  We assume you’ll want to spend at least 30 minutes a day at home chowing down some great books.  Students who read on their own become better readers, of course; but, more importantly, they absorb so much more of the human experience—readers read stories that reenact humankind’s universal struggles, reveal unforgettable characters and insist on the reader reconsidering what he or she once took for granted. And reading is super for anyone no matter what you’re interested in—because there are books on any subject and in every possible genre—and they all count for English credit!

How do I earn points for reading books!

Students are expected to read at least 3 books each term in addition to the term’s in-class novel.  Each book (over 150 pages) will count as 100 points towards the final grade. If a book is especially long, like 500 pages or more, you can
ask permission from your teacher to count it as two books.  Throughout each term, there will be three deadlines for completing a book, and a form to fill out which allows you to reflect on the book you’ve read.

What kind of books should I read?

Read a wide variety of books, exploring authors and genres that are still new to you.  Check out books of poetry, historical fiction, sci-fi, best-sellers, classics, mysteries, Greek dramas, biographies, fantasy, non-fiction—you name it!  Every genre has its own little quirks—things that make it a little tricky to figure out if you haven’t read much from that genre before. So read widely! Stock up at Provo Library, or get a new book from Dixon’s library every couple weeks.

Please bring your book to English class every day!
